The History of the Episcopal Church

When studying the history if the Episcopal church, the first thing that should be learnt is that it started its existence as some independent denomination after the revolution in America. Nowadays, this church has a few million members in such countries as Mexico, the US, and others, but they all are under the jurisdiction of the presiding bishop. In this church, all bishops must be elected by special individual dioceses and they are consecrated into the so-called Apostolic Succession. They also must be considered to witness to the unbroken line of the church leadership, starting with apostles.

For more than a few decades, this church has ordained women to its priesthood. In 1988, the 1st Anglican female bishop was elected in Massachusetts. The Episcopal Church considered the Bible to be inspired divinely, subscribes to the Nicene Creed, and holds the Eucharist to be the main act of its Christian worship. Besides, it grants some great latitude in the interpretation of this doctrine. One of the main differences is that this church tends to focus less on the confession of specific beliefs than using the book of common player in its public worshipping.

This interesting book was published in the 16th century, and it has many revisions, but it still remains the main source of unity for all people who belong to the Episcopal Church these days. It has always valued the dialogue with members and the life of their minds. Isaac Newton was a famous theologian and clergyman in addition to a few other founders of their Royal Society, and it was the earliest organization to promote science. This church is targeted at promoting this unique tradition, so it always requires its clergy to hold some seminary and university degrees while supporting a number of university chaplains.

Another basic fact to learn is that the Episcopal Church derives from the Church of England that dates back to the 2nd century when merchants and many travelers brought Christianity to their country. Officially, this church was based in 597 by St. Augustine of Canterbury, so it happened in the Middle Ages. This church claims to maintain its apostolic succession and stresses its continuity with the western ancient church. Finally, the Episcopal Church also has close links to the Crown, and this is what resulted in its reorganization in the 18th century. At that time, many wealthy Americans and English immigrants were among its members.
