Destruction through Imagery and Theme in The English Patient

Michael Ondaatje used in his novel “The English Patient” the method of imagery which helps to illustrate the theme of its destruction. Both the settings and characters present to the readers the vivid picture of the demolition. According to the critics, imagery of Ondaatje is also a vital element in the demonstrating of this topic.

The novel “The English Patient” is about the ends of World War II and war-ravaged village in Italy. Michael gives the vivid descriptions of the damage of this village happened due to the war. Ondaatje also gives the memorable and detailed descriptions which complete the picture of the countryside. It is said about the dead cattle, and people who hang upside down from the bridges. This vivid imagery makes the most proper and appropriate background for the characters of the novel.

After beginning the reading, reader meets the first character who is introduced by the author. It is Hana who is the nurse. This novel is full of feelings of lost, pain and suffering. And the physical damage is most obvious in the English patient by himself. It is because of the soothing the patient whose skin is blackened except the bone. And Hana soothes her own interior wounds as well. One critic said that if the skin of her soul had been burned by the sparkle, the death of English patient had been burned by the fire.

The author also engaged Kip, who is the sapper from the English army. Man suffers of the same inner wounds as Hana does. The breaking of his adopted family is represented in a vivid manner. The denotation of the few bombs has destroyed everyone about whom he cared. There are some episodes when the reader can remain the images of Kip defusing these bombs.

These potent images let to see the theme of the destruction in the novel of Ondaatje “The English Patient”. With the help of images of crumbling villas, burns and bombs, the reader may gain the better understandings of the damages which are within the souls of characters. And author used really best method.
