The Writer Charles Lutwidge Dodgson

Lewis Carroll (real name Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) is English author, mathematician, logician, philosopher, deacon, and photographer. His most famous works are Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, as well as a humorous poem The Hunting of the Snark.

Dodgson was born in the small village of Daresbury in Cheshire. He was the eldest son of a humble parish priest Charles Dodgson and Frances Jane Lutwidge. His father didn’t suppress in children the desire for all sorts of games and fun diversions and helped them in every way. The inventor of them all was always Charles. With the help of a village carpenter Charles fashioned a puppet theater. He wrote plays, which he himself played. Often disguised as a fakir, he showed amazing tricks to an excited audience.

When Charles was 12, he was sent to school, first of Richmond and then to the famous Rugby. It was a privileged institution of a closed type, which caused the most resolute hostility in Carroll.

His further life is associated with Oxford. He graduated from the College of Christ Church, one of the oldest in Oxford, with honors in two faculties: mathematics and classical language. In 1855, he was offered a professorial post at his college, the traditional condition of which was the adoption of the spiritual dignity and celibacy. In 1861 he was ordained a deacon.

Dodgson loved children very much. He felt alien to adults; he felt awkward and uncomfortable talking to them, but he became extremely fun and entertaining when he was in company of children. He went with them for long walks, took them to the theater, entertained them with his own stories, etc. Communicating with children was an impetus to Carroll’s creative impulse. His best works – both tales about Alice and poems – appeared as an improvisation.

Tales Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass are loved both by adults and children. They are cited and linked by it and physicists; they are studied by philosophers and linguists, psychologists and mathematicians. A lot of articles, research papers, and books are written about them.

Dodgson wrote remarkable and original humorous poems. Some verses from the books about Alice Carroll were published in 1855 in the Comic-Times. He has published many of his poetry collections in various periodicals, anonymously or under his pseudonym Lewis Carroll. The most famous poem of Carroll is a poem in the genre of nonsense Hunting of the Snark.

In winter 1898, Lewis Carroll got flu, which led to pneumonia. Charles Dodgson and died on January 14, 1898.
