The Importance of Leadership

Leadership is a key factor of success in many modern professions. It is hard to imagine a successful seller without the ability to attract the attention of potential buyers to the product. Salesman won’t be able to cope with the responsibilities, if he or she cannot quickly establish confidence contact with a new client. The manager will not be an effective leader without the ability of informal influence on the subordinate. Most jobs require some degree of manifestation of leadership.

Experience shows that no single factor provides greater benefit for the organization rather than effective leadership. Leaders are needed to set goals and objectives, for the organization, coordination, maintenance of interpersonal contacts with the subordinates, and the selection of optimal and efficient solutions to various problems. Obviously, organizations with leaders can achieve all of these much faster than organizations without leaders.

The leader is the one who is leading and is always ahead. Leader is a member of the organization with a high personal status who has a strong influence on the opinions and behavior of the people around, the members of a certain association, organization and who implements a complex of functions.

The nature of leadership can be better understood if it is compared with the actual control. Being a manager and being a leader in the organization is not the same thing. Manager mostly uses and relies on official sources of power when influencing the work of subordinates and building a relationship with them. Leadership is based more on the process of social influence, cooperation within the organization. This process is much more complex and requires a high level of interaction between the participants. Unlike management, leadership presupposes the presence of followers, not subordinates in the organization. Accordingly, the superior-subordinate relationship inherent in the traditional view of management is replaced by leader-follower relationships.

Usually leaders are people who are able to win over, engage in a common cause, and tune people for the result. A person, who is able using the formal levers of power, set a problem and monitor its execution, is not a leader.

In contrast to the ability of management, leadership is the ability to find resources in the conditions of deficiency. This is an ability to influence without formal levers of power. Leadership is the ability to communicate with people so that they set more and more complex tasks for themselves and increase the efficiency of their performance.
