Chaotic Years of the Seventeenth Century

17th-18th centuries have a special place in the history of modern period. 17th century was a transitional period full of contradictions and struggles that completed the story of European feudalism and started the period of victories and assertions of capitalism in the advanced countries of Europe and America.

Elements of capitalist production have arisen even in the depths of the feudal system. By the middle of 17th century contradictions between capitalism and feudalism acquired pan-European character. In England, these differences resulted in a bourgeois revolution. Along with the English bourgeois revolution there were revolutionary movements in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, Poland, and other countries. However, feudalism remained on the European continent. Almost everywhere in Europe the feudal-absolutist monarchies preserved and nobility was the ruling class.

Art culture of the 17th century reflects the complexity of the era that prepared the victory of the capitalist system in the economically developed countries of Europe. By the 17th century, Europeans’ knowledge about the world was greatly enhanced. There were almost no white spots on a geographical map. New scientific and philosophical concepts – the Earth revolves around the Sun and the infinity of the universe – showed how vast and complex the world was.

The 17th century was the century of revolution not only for science, but also for the performing arts, especially, dramatic theater and opera. Drama of Lope de Vega, Corneille, Calderon, and Moliere, gave the status of high art to the theater and the image that it retains to this day. Composers Monteverdi, Scarlatti, and Lully played a similar role in the field of opera.

The art of the 17th century embodies the complexity of this era. In has vividly imprinted collision forces of reaction and progress and the persistent struggle of the best men of the time for the high human ideals.

Compared with the Renaissance, art of the 17th century is complex and contradictory in content and artistic forms. Holistic poetic perception of the world, typical of the Renaissance, was destroyed. But the image of a man is still the focus of the artist. The Titans, sung in works of the Renaissance era, gave way to a man, conscious of his dependence on the social environment and the objective laws of existence. Real life is revealed by artists of the 17th century in a variety of dramatic collisions and conflicts, grotesque, satirical, and comedic situations.

17th-18th centuries have a special place in the history of modern period. 17th century was a transitional period full of contradictions and struggles that completed the story of European feudalism and started the period of victories and assertions of capitalism in the advanced countries of Europe and America.
