Intelligence in Chekhov’s Three Sisters

One of the most famous plays of Chekhov is Three Sisters. He wrote it in 1900, while living in Yalta. It premiered on stage in 1901.

The source of the conflict in the play is a modern motif of loneliness in the family. But it is not a physical loneliness, when there is no one around. The loneliness in the play is the lack of a kindred spirit who could understand your emotional mood, hopes, and dreams.

In Chekhov’s play, all the characters – the Prozorovs sisters, their brother Andrew, and friends of their house – are separated and alone, despite the fact that they love each other. These characters are helpless: they cannot understand either themselves or others.

Three sisters – Olga, Masha, and Irina – and their brother Andrei, are intelligent and well-educated people who live in the provincial town where, according to Andrei, people just eat, drink, sleep, and in order not to go crazy from boredom, gossip, drink vodka, and play cards. All of them are symbols of intelligence. The eldest of the sisters, Olga, is a teacher in women’s gymnasium, but the work does not bring her joy. Masha at 18 married a school teacher Kulygin and although her husband loves her devotedly, she is unhappy in her family life. Younger sister, Irina, is 20; she dreams of having a fulfilled life, but can’t understand what she wants from life and can’t find a man she could love.

11 years ago, their father, after being appointed the General, took his daughters away from the city of Moscow; but a year ago the general died and the carefree life he provided for the family ended. The play begins at the day of mourning for their father, which coincided with Irina’s birthday: it is time to think about their future, and the Prozorovs dream of returning to Moscow.

The problems of family and love occupy an important place in the play. Yet the main question for all the characters remains: How to live?

Confusion, frustration, and realization of being deceived bring together all the main characters of the play. They all say that they wish they could turn back the time. Sisters’ desire to return to Moscow and its unrealizability become a symbol of disappointed dreams in the play.

The main characters of The Three Sisters are unhappy, but the meaning of the play is not limited to the image of unhappy life of unhappy people. Chekhov allows you to see deeply into the causes of the misfortunes of his characters. The peculiarity of this conflict in the play is the fact that by confronting different characters or groups of characters, the author insists that they are all connected, albeit secretly.
