Oedipus Complex of Hamlet

The Oedipus complex is a desire of a child to have sexual relations with one of the parents of the opposite sex.

In 1899, Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis and neurologist, wrote a book titled An Interpretation of Dream. In his book, Freud described the theory of the Oedipus complex. According to Freud, it is normal for a child to desire sexually the parent of the opposite gender and hate the parent of the same gender. Usually, children experience this complex between 3-5 years old. Such feeling then goes away, as the child gets older. Freud used the Oedipus complex theory to explain Hamlet’s actions.

When Gertrude, a mother of Hamlet, gets married to Claudius, his uncle, Hamlet becomes upset because another man becomes so close with his mother. Inside of his subconscious, Hamlet wants himself to become a king and marry his mother. From Hamlet’s worlds "Must I remember?," it is clear that he does not want to remember his mother showing her love toward his father; he wants to be the one for her. The Oedipus Complex is the real reason why Hamlet hates Claudius.

According to the Oedipus complex theory, a child hates the parent of the same gender. Hamlet obvious hates both men of his mother, including King Hamlet and Claudius. King Hamlet had to spend lots of time on the war, which means that he did not spend much time with his son. In his words, Hamlet does not put word “father” first, but “king.” This means that King was for him a man, king, but not a father. Hamlet hates Claudius more openly but hesitates to kill him because does not want Claudius to appear in heaven. Hamlet hates Claudius very much and that is why the desire to kill him for his bad actions.

The ghost of his father tells Hamlet that Claudius is the killer of him and King wants Hamlet to avenge for him. Hamlet does not find this task easy. On one hand, he wants to kill Claudius, but, on the other hand, something prevents him from this. This must be the Oedipus complex that makes Hamlet feel guilty because he feels the same as Claudius. Claudius killed King Hamlet, and if Hamlet kills Claudius, he would be the same as he. Unconsciously, he compares himself to Claudius, and this causes doubts in him.

The madness of Hamlet is explained simply. He is angry with his mother and Claudius, but Hamlet's actions are not only explained only by the anger. He hesitates to kill Claudius, and he is obsessed with thoughts how Claudius and his mother make love. The Oedipus Complex is the reasons why Hamlet behaves this way.
