The Second World War

World War II was the war of two world military and political coalitions, which became the largest armed conflict in the history of mankind. 62 of the 73 countries that existed at the time took part in the war (80% of the world’s population). The fighting took place on the territory of three continents and the waters of the four oceans. This is the only conflict in which nuclear weapons were used.

Scientists have identified a number of the main reasons for the outbreak of hostilities:

  • Territorial disputes. The winners of the war in 1918, Britain and France, divided Europe with its allies at its sole discretion. Collapse of the Russian Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire led to the formation of 9 new countries. The lack of clear boundaries gave rise to great controversy. The defeated countries wanted to return their borders, and the winners were not willing to part with the attached territories. All territorial issues in Europe have always been solved by force of arms. It was impossible to avoid a war.
  • Colonial disputes. The defeated countries were deprived of their colonies, which have been a constant source of replenishment of the treasury.
  • The rivalry between the states. After the defeat, Germany wanted revenge. It has always been the leading power in Europe, and after the war its power was limited in many ways.
  • Dictatorship. The dictatorial regime in many countries has significantly increased.
  • The emergence of the Soviet Union. The new power was not inferior to the power of the Russian Empire. It was a worthy rival to the United States and leading European countries.

From September 1st, 1939 to July 21st, 1941 was the first phase of the Second World War. It is characterizes by the invasion of the German military in the Western Europe. On September 1st, the Nazis invaded Poland. After 2 days, France and Britain with its colonies and dominions declared war on Germany.

From June 22, 1941 to November 18, 1942 the second phase of the war lasted. Germany invaded the Soviet Union. It was the time when all military forces in the world united against fascism.

From November 19, 1942 to December 31, 1943 the third phase of the war began. Military actions of this period gained a huge scale and intensity and occurred on the Soviet-German front.

From January 1, 1944 to May 9, 1945, the fascist army was ousted from the USSR.

From May 10, 1945 till September 2, 1945, armed actions are carried out in the Far East, as well as South-East Asia, where US used nuclear weapons.
