A Critical Response to Baptized in Blood

Baptized in Blood in an interesting book written by Charles Wilson, and it was released in 1980. Basically, it’s supposed to break the new ground in New South and Reconstruction history because this literary work is a sensible and valuable interpretation of the southern mythmaking after the Civil War based on one important observation that southern people can’t escape their true history. The subject matter of this book is quite familiar to readers, but the author manages to adopt new ways and approaches to decipher and tell the audience how southern people achieved their dream of separate cultural identities, despite failing in their attempts to get separate political identities.

This work is also relied on the article of Robert Bellah while presenting its unique and untested concept of the existence of a dual culture that includes southern and northern versions. The author claims that people on the south understood that the outcomes of the Civil War provided them with a certain historical distinct from people on the north. Besides, Wilson documents that there were 2 civil religions in the US, and one of them wasn’t intended to honor this nation. He research primary sources to offer a significant and well-written book that studies the civil religion of the south that belongs to one of the public faiths in America.

Southern people had to abandon their dream of getting their separate political identity, but they still managed to preserve their cultural identity, thanks to mixing Christian symbols with the imagery of Confederate traditions. Wilson defines any civil religion as a specific dimension of people that enables them to comprehend different historical experiences in their transcended terms. The author also explores the role of this type of religion in southern culture and states that their defeat made people on the south to start thinking in religious terms about the unique meaning of their tragic experiences.

Some of them thought that this defeat had its religious nature, so it questioned their relationship with God. This important historical event was interpreted as some trial so that pain and suffering had to lead people in this region to their greater strength and virtue. For example, the Lost Cause ideas were about organized efforts to preserve the memories of the Confederacy, and its literary, social, and political aspects are well-researched.
