The Law and the Liberal Society in the modern world

Democracy (from the Greek word "demos" - "people") is often defined as a method of governance in which the supreme power belongs to the people. In certain forms of social order, only people can implement democracy in life, but when society is very huge in population, people use their right on democratic through their elected representatives.

Often the concept of "freedom" and "democracy" are used interchangeably, but they are not synonymous. Democracy is a set of ideas and principles relating to freedom, as well as practices and procedures that were formed during a long and often difficult historical process.

People living in a democratic society, should serve as the most active guardians of their own freedom and find their own way to the ideals enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the UN.

Democracy can be of two types - direct and representative. The first variant, citizens have the opportunity to participate in finding social solutions not through elected or appointed officials, but personally. That's why this is called direct democracy. This system is most effective for little groups, when all people can gather in one room, discuss relevant issues, and decide issues by majority vote.

From the 17th century, the existence of direct democracy becomes impossible. People cannot take part in the discussion of public issues together. Democracy gets a representative character. The people use the right to choose their way of life, but does not directly, through their representatives, which are elected. During regular elections citizens express support for a particular candidate member of parliament by voting "for" or "against".

In 19-20 centuries, the direct and representative forms of democracy are often combined. They used in most modern countries. Some believe that the power of the people and democratic in general is a fiction: the citizen participates in government only at the moment when they throw the ballot into the ballot boxes, and then all the power is concentrated in the hands of politicians. However, in reality politicians cannot ignore the will of the citizens-voters. In modern democracies, the guarantor of democracy is the ability of citizens to control the government through parliamentary commissions, local authorities and the media.
