Thomas More’s Utopia Book Report

Dreams of happiness and an ideal society have long troubled people. In 1516, Thomas More, a politician, Chancellor of England, wrote a book about the best structure of the state on a remote island – Utopia. Literally, Utopia is a place that doesn’t exist.

Thomas More’s Utopia is composed of two parts. The first part shows England in the beginning of the 16th century and its vital problems. More gave a profound critique of contemporary socio-economic and political system of the United Kingdom and came to the conclusion that the obstacle to justice was a private property, so the only way to the well-being of society is to declare the property of equality, which is unlikely to implement, when everybody has its own property.

More’s protest against social injustice a project of a new society elaborated by him, where there was an end to exploitation of a man by a man. In such a society all wealth belongs to the working people. In Utopia the common wealth is not only natural resources (land and its minerals), but also all the products of public production, which is also placed at the disposal of all citizens.

The system of labor service, which More dreamed about, does not turn labor into a burden. The organization of production has only one purpose – deprive all the citizens of the bodily bondage and give them as much time as possible for spiritual freedom and enlightenment. The philosopher believes that this is the happiness of life.

Utopia is an attempt to design a state with a social and economic structure that is able to provide a decent life to a man, and More is trying to create a specific picture of an ideal society. The coat of arms of Utopia is the same the one of the first socialist state – symbols fruitful work: hammer, sickle, and ears of rye.

However, when designing a just society, More is still forced to admit the existence of slaves. They are a powerless category of population, burdened with a heavy social labor. They are chained and constantly busy. Utopians, according to More, need slaves to save citizens from the most heavy and dirty work.

In the conditions of feudal England, More could not find a real social force that would be able to replace the bad system with the fair one. Instead of controlling the state by means of violence, looting, and confiscation, bringing by these people to poverty, he thought, it is better to voluntarily relinquish power. However, More emphasizes that ruin and misery of the people awake the desire for revolution and strife.

The essence of Utopia is defined be the idea of social transformation, search for the most perfect social system, capable of providing happiness to anyone.
