The Pledge by Francis Bellamy

Francis Bellamy was a Christian socialist minister who is best known for writing the American Pledge of Allegiance.

The original text of Bellamy has been changed twice. Congress officially recognized the oath in 1942 and added some words in 1954.

Thirty-one words that affirm the values and freedoms that symbolize the American flag are pronounced before the flag as an oath showing the Americans’ allegiance to their country. The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 for the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Francis Bellamy. Francis Bellamy said that his goal was to say what their country meant and its spirit. The National Committee, composed of educators and civic leaders, planned celebrations in public schools on the occasion of Columbus Day, when much attention should have been paid to the American flag. The oath to the flag, according to the scenario, was to be the culmination of the ceremony at the flag rising. On Columbus Day in October 1892, students across the United States were the first who pronounced The Pledge of Allegiance.

According to some accounts Bellamy wanted to create a vow rather than a welcome of banner, because the oath could express more loyalty even after 27 years since the Civil War. One nation, indivisible is an echo of the Civil War, and the liberty and justice for all is an expression of the ideals of the Declaration of Independence.

The words my flag were replaced with the words United States Flag in 1923, because by saying the oath, immigrants could have had in mind the flag of the country they were born in. A year later the word America was added to the oath. Official recognition of the Congress The Pledge of Allegiance received only June 22, 1942, when it was officially included in the Code of the United States flag. The official name The Pledge of Allegiance received in 1945.

Initially, the pledge was pronounced with the right hand raised in a so-called Bellamy salute. With Hitler coming to power in Europe, Americans began to be embarrassed with such a salute, reminiscent of the greeting of the Nazi army. In 1942, Congress passed the current oath process, when the right hand is simply placed on the heart.

Articles 7 of the United States Flag Code states that men wearing civilian clothes should remove their headdress with right hand and hold it at the left shoulder so that the right hand was on the heart. People in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag, giving it a military salute.

Flag Code states that any changes to the text of the pledge shall be made with the consent of the President.
