Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath – the epoch of devastation

John Steinbeck is a novelist, short-story writer, and documentary filmmaker, put on a par with the two giants of American literature - Hemingway and Faulkner. His The Grapes of Wrath is written on the basis of personal experience. It is a specific response to a sharp aggravation of the socio-economic situation in the United States in the late 30-ies.

The novel tells the story about a ruinous impact of large monopolies on farmers. The writer compares men’s souls with the heavy bunch of grapes that grow into the grapes of wrath due to frustration in efforts to save their farmstead.

Steinbeck reveals the problem of human existence in an adverse social environment and the protection of the human rights. The plot is focused on the Joads, the family which embodies the destiny of all Oklahoma farmers. In the summer of 1937 many of the Central States to the west of the middle Mississippi suffered a severe drought, accompanied by "dust storms" – weathering of the soil. Thousands of impoverished farmers and tenants had to leave their homes. As a result, there was a huge wave of immigrants, displaced farm workers, to seek refuge in the valleys of the "Golden state" California.

These people are driven from the land without being offered anything in return. There is no justice and care towards the farmers from the government officials. People are forced to submit to circumstances and to look for happiness in the regions from where they have received job offer flyers promising high pay. It seems the whole country runs west from the disaster.

California met the unemployed immigrants with hostility. Despite this, the farmers took desperate attempts to find a job to feed their children. The impressive thing is how the writer portrayed the solidarity of the people who lost everything but have maintained humanity, kindness, mercy and compassion. Unfortunately, the failures, the hostility of the locals, and pinching of small farms made people realise the hopelessness of their situation. Just then, the grapes of wrath ripen in their hearts.

The novel draws attention to the fact that the laws often exist only on paper which definitely leads to social disaster. Moreover, people being driven beyond endurance, have no choice than to cross the law. Violence begets violence. Steinbeck reminds us of what may happen in the case of negative economic situation and neglecting people’s needs.
