Down At The Dinghy: a brief summary

"Down at the Dinghy" can be defined as a short story written by J. D. Salinger. The story was originally released in Harper's, April 1949, and came with the compilation, Nine Stories.

Created in the summer of 1948 at Lake Geneva, the story actually marks a visible shift away from Salinger’s literary misanthropy, that had largely been informed by his combat experiences in Europe during WWII, and toward a reaffirmation of human interdependence as well as spiritual reawakening.

The piece comes with “Boo Boo” Glass Tannenbaum. That’s one of the major members of Salinger’s fictional Glass family.

Told in two distinct segments, the first suggests a discussion between two house servants regarding their employer’s little boy, boasting a history of running away. The second segment deals with the mom’s efforts to reassure her kid and help him to cope with his fears.

The story breaks out with the two house servants, named Mrs. Snell and Sandra, talking about the homeowner's young son, Lionel. Sandra is concerned that Lionel is going to tell Boo Boo, her employer, that Sandra has already made some anti-Semitic remarks regarding Lionel’s Jewish dad. Boo Boo discovers Lionel in a dinghy preparing to cast off, he refuses to allow his mom to join him. As a matter of fact, Boo Boo pretends to be admiral of the imaginary ship just to win Lionel over and find out why he is trying to run away. He resists and even dares to throw his uncle Seymour's old goggles right into the lake.

Lionel informs Boo Boo that Sandra called his dad a big sloppy kike. While he isn’t aware of what this ethnic slur actually means, conflating the epithet “kike” with “kite”, he manages to grasp its derogatory connotation. Boo Boo, in an attempt to reassure the boy and help him to cope with the episode, definitely succeeds in providing him insights into her own needs as well as the love she feels for him. At the end of the story, they both race across the beach toward home, and Lionel grasps the long-awaited victory.

The story, originally dubbed “Killer in the Dinghy” has some clearly autobiographical elements. Salinger resembles Boo Boo Tannenbaum’s four-year-old kidson, Lionel. Just as that kid he’s also prone to running away from home to escape from a conflict.

The tale also addresses the popular issue of anti-Semitism during the post-war period when the facts of fascist atrocities carried out against minorities, including Jews, were getting fully understood.
