The Environmental Destruction in Amazon Rainforest
Since 1978 over 750,000 square kilometers of Amazon rainforest have been destroyed across Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, Suriname, and Peru. What is the reason to destroy the biggest rainforest on the planet? Amazon rainforest disappears very quickly and it is awful for environmental and the whole planet. While you are reading this article an area of rainforest larger than 40 football fields will have been destroyed. Once rainforests covered 14% of Earth’s surface, now only 6%. If humanity will continue destroying rainforests, it might disappear in 40 years. So let’s consider the main reason of deforestation of Amazon rainforest. Logging tropical trees for exportation to produce furniture, plywood, etc. In theory, logging in the Amazon is regulated by strict licensing, but in practice, illegal logging is really widespread in Brazil and Peru. The paper industry also requires a massive amount of pulpwood trees. As a result, big areas of the rainforest is burned to plant pulpwood trees. The next cause to destroy rainforests is cattle grazing. Ranchers need more place for pastures for their livestock. It is known that to raise one steer consumes two acres of the rainforest. After ranchers, land degrades fast, which means new rainforest land needs to be destroyed to satisfy ranchers’ needs.
Colonization and agriculture. Agriculture has always been a cause of deforestation in the Amazon. However, about 10% rainforest land is good for conventional agriculture. Soon land gets exhausted and farmers have to move deeper into the rainforest in search of new, fresh land. In addition, Brazilian scientists developed a new sort of variety of soybean and as a consequence, a big area of rainforest was converted to soy fields.
Hydroelectric dams and road building. Dams have a bad influence on the local wildlife, affecting migratory fish for example. Since 1970s, about 9000 miles of road have been built through the rainforest. The cause of improving the infrastructure was soy that provided the impetus for building new highways.
Therefore, deforestation of Amazon rainforest is a very serious problem that can lead to bad consequences. For example, increased threat from global warming, water and air pollution, widespread flooding and soil erosion. Though the rate of deforestation has been slowing since the remaining forest cover continues to dwindle.
