Conflict of Women in 20th Century India

Constitution of India in 1950 provided the equal rights for women and men, equality of status and opportunity. It has been declared the prohibition of discrimination on grounds of sex.

Hindu Marriage Act was repealed (1955), the monogamy as the norm was approved, as well as the legal possibility of a divorce; Succession Act (1956) putted this right to the Indian women; law prohibiting dowry (1961) and subsequent amendments thereto (1986), aimed at combating the practice of compulsory dowry for the bride, which is extensive; the law on the limitation of early marriage (1978), to raise the age of marriage for girls to 18 years, for boys - up to 21 years. But not everyone follows these rules of law, but they are indicators of the direction in which society should move.

However, the position of Indian women must be seen in a social context, as the status and role of women in different social groups differ markedly. It is hardly possible to talk about improving of the quality of life of rural women. Over the past 30 years, together with some increases in their employment in low-paid jobs going repression of female labor from some of the traditional areas of application. In cases where the woman is the head of the family and has properties, including a piece of land, it cannot either inherit it, nor to sell.

It should be said about the women of the middle class, which has about 200 million. Man. It is in their midst the greatest changes occur, although there are still marriages organized by the parents or guardians of girls.

Social progress in India is ambiguous. On the one hand, women of higher and middle strata of society open access to higher education. Yet, after graduating from college or university, most of them become housewives.

Today, women with higher and specialized secondary education can be found in almost all spheres of socio-political and economic life. They are presented in the most advanced fields of economy, science and technology. Example: women pilots, working in international airline Air India. March 8, 1998, on the occasion of International Women's Day, two crews of the company, staffed only by women, committed commercial flights.

In the private sector, women receive between 50 and 75% of men's wages. Labor legislation on equal pay applies mainly to employees in the public sector, where they are the most protected position.
