The Overcoat, by Nikolai Gogol

The story of Nikolai Gogol's "Overcoat" has played a big role in the development of Russian literature.

The story "The Overcoat" is told from the first person. We notice that the narrator knows the life of officials. The hero of the story - Akaki Bashmachkin, small official of one of the departments in St. Petersburg - disenfranchised and humiliated people.

Co-workers treated him without respect. Even the guard in the department looked at Bashmachkin as at empty space. Young officials laughed at Akaki. He was really ridiculous, funny man, who could only rewrite the paper.

The narration in "The Overcoat" is constructed so that the comic image Bashmachkin gradually becoming tragic. He walked in an old overcoat, which could no longer be repaired. Because of the tailor`s advice to save money on a new overcoat, he saved: in the evening he did not light candles, did not drink tea. Akaki went very carefully on the streets, "almost on tiptoe", to "not scuff the soles" ahead of time, rarely gave laundress linen. New overcoat became a dream, and the meaning of life of the protagonist of the story.

And Bashmachkin overcoat was already ready. On this occasion, officials arranged the banquet. Happy Akaki did not even notice that they mock. At night, when Bashmachkin was returning from the banquet, the robbers took off his coat. The happiness of this man lasted only one day. He appealed for help to the police, but anyone did not even want to talk. Then Akaki goes to a "significant person", but he throws him. These troubles have worked so hard on the story of the hero, that he could not survive them. He fell ill and died.

Stressing the typical fate of the "little man," Gogol said that his death did not change anything in the department; Bashmachkin place was just taken by another official.

The story "The Overcoat", despite its realism, finishes fantastic. After the death of Akaki ghost began to appear that took off overcoat with passers-by on the streets of St. Petersburg. Some saw its similarities with Bashmachkin, others did not notice anything in common with a burglared timid bureaucrat. One night the ghost met "important person" and tore off his overcoat, scaring officer till that he "began to fear even to some painful seizure." After this incident, a "significant person" started to treat people better. This end of the story emphasizes the author's intent. Gogol sympathizes with the fate of the "little man." He calls us to be attentive to each other, and, he warns that a person will have to answer in the future for the wrongs inflicted on one's neighbor.
