The Origins of the Vietnam War

When studying the main causes of the well-known and tragic Vietnam War, their roots and origins are traced back to the end of WWII. This is when Indochina, a French colony, was occupied by Japanese people and the Viet Minh was formed by Ho Chi Minh as a powerful nationalist movement to resist occupiers. They started the war against Japan while being supported by the US. In the end, Japanese occupiers started to promote nationalism in Vietnam and granted this country with its nominal independence.

In 1945, the party of Ho Chi Minh starts the so-called August Revolution to take control over the country. The Allied Powers made a decision that this country needed to remain under the control of France, so this region was full of Chinese, British, and French forces. Ho Chi Minh was pressured by the Soviet Union to negotiate with France to prevent it from retaking its possession of this country. They were allowed to enter Vietnam only with the permission of the Viet Minh and their basic goal was gaining independence as a member of the French Union. After endless discussions, French troops reentered Hanoi and Haiphong forcibly.

This action started another huge conflict called the 1stIndochina War between France and the Viet Minh. Everything starts at its low level, and this fighting escalated quite soon. The Viet Minh was increasingly well-equipped, and this is what enabled its direct engagement against its enemy, so France was decisively defeated in 1954. This famous war launched officially the same year after the Geneva Accords.

The politics and policies of the US involvement played a major role in the origins of this war. In the beginning, America had no interest in this region, but it soon became obvious that the post-war world would be dominated by the Soviet Union, the US, and their allies. That’s why the isolation of communism was very important for America, and this concern was formed into the domino theory.

In 1950, the US started to supply France in Vietnam with the necessary funds, advisors, and other sources to win the Viet Minh. This assistance extended to its direct intervention a few years later, and it happened when the US forces actively supported Dien Bein Phu as an effective opposition to Ho Chi Minh. Finally, the whole situation in this region started to escalate and it transformed into a military conflict that took many lives and is now written in the history of the world.
