Love and Disillusionment in Araby and A and P

A and P is a short story written by John Updike, and Araby is an interesting novel written by James Joyce. Both of these writing pieces tell readers a story of those characters who are in love with a woman who they don’t know, and that’s why the theme of love and disillusionment plays a huge role in them. Araby is a story that ends and starts sadly, but A and P starts happily and ends with certain heroic acts that go unnoticed by other people.

Both central characters of these literary works experience new ideas and situations to them, and both short stories can be examined with contemplation based on the initiation type that happens. However, these characters have both different and similar features in addition to diverse effects of these stories. In them, both men experience an awareness or initiation of their new actualities that are outside of their inner worlds. They clearly understand that everything that happens is beyond their personal control, so it’s impossible for them to ignore this new certainty.

A setting of Araby is in Dublin, in a quiet place where one young and poor man lives in the old house, which is in its quite bad condition because no one is looking after it. Its garden is not controlled and books seem to be everywhere. This character will have to face his first failed love. Both short stories have certain differences, but there are many things in common. For instance, their protagonists are moved from one life stage to another to face their disillusionment.

In Araby, this man is captivated by the older sister of Mangan and promises to bring a gift from the bazaar that has its mystical name Araby. In A and P, the main character is a young man who works as a cashier in the local shop called A and P. He does his best to win the attention of one attractive woman and he decides to make one chivalric gesture. In both stories, romance must to give its way to the reality, and a key conflict happens when protagonists find themselves in certain discord with the values of their society.

These are well-known initiation stories that describe the personal experiences of adolescent protagonists who must come into conflict with their cultures. Both of them live in quite restrictive cultures and societies while being oppressed by religion and other limiting factors. That’s why both of them decide to escape from the reality into their romantic fantasies that don’t exist.
