Jean-Paul Sartre’s on the Aspect of Existentialism

Existentialist philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre developed during the climax of the acute geopolitical crisis in Europe, which was broke by the World War II.

The basis of the philosophy of Sartre is the problem of understanding the human being as a conscious and free activity. Limitation of interest of the philosopher by questions of the spiritual life of people in their everyday life is explained by the fact that he considers the scope of labor economic activity as an area in which a person does not belong to oneself, where an individual is subject to regulations imposed to them, i.e. where a person leads an inauthentic existence.

Sartre’s characters usually react to this state with retreat or escape from an unacceptable reality. The topic of seclusion discussed in the play No Exit with its three characters going through painful experiences in a faceless hotel room.

In the novel Room we sew an imprisoned mentally ill husband and his wife who does not want to leave him. In the play The Condemned of Altona a hermit is represented by a former officer of Hitler’s army and then by his sister. Painful sensations of lack of freedom, both objective and subjective, are experienced by arrested Spanish Republicans in the short story The Wall. In these works in painful bondage atmosphere of fear, hopelessness and suffering people seek to exert their strength to keep their dignity.

The main philosophical work of Sartre is Being and Nothingness where he makes an attempt to find the essence of life, which determines the existence of inauthenticity.

According to the ideas of Sartre, the subjectivity of the individual consciousness becomes important for others, i.e. becomes a being for others, when the existence of the individual falls in the range of perception of another consciousness. The attitude to another is a struggle for the recognition of individual freedom on the part of another person.

Human existence, according to Sartre, is a circuit series of self-denial, where freedom is realized. Man is inherent to freedom that does not tolerate cause or reason; it implies independence of both the past and the present, it is not determined by either. Freedom means breaking and denying the past and the present. To be free is to have the ability to change and be able to act in the world.

For Sartre, a man has the freedom, regardless of the real possibilities of realization of their desires. According to the philosopher, objective circumstances cannot deprive a person of liberty. It can be kept in any environment and is a choice of relationship to the phenomena of reality.
