Carl Gauss was a famous scientist in the fields of Physics and Mathematics, responsible for innumerable contributions to the number theory, analysis, differential geometry, geodesy, magnetism, astronomy, optics, and many others. The concepts that he came up with have greatly influenced the science of mathematics and scientific world in general.

Carl Friedrich Gauss was born on April 13th, 1777 in Brunswick, Duchy of Brunswick, which is modern Germany. His family was poor and he was the only son of a bricklayer. Despite the difficult living conditions, Gauss’s intelligence showed at a young age. He learnt the letters of the alphabet at the age of two, and soon afterwards he learnt reading and counting.

In 1788 Gauss started studying at the Gymnasium where he learned High German and Latin. Upon receiving a scholarship from the Duke of Brunswick in 1792, Gauss entered Brunswick Collegium Carolinum. During his at the academy Gauss discovered Bode’s law on his own, the binomial theorem, and the arithmetic-geometric mean, as well as the law of quadratic reciprocity and the theorem of prime number. In 1795 Gauss left Brunswick to study at Gottingen University and graduated from it in 1798. By that time his most significant discoveries were made, i.e. the construction of a regular seventeen-gon by ruler and compasses. This was the most important progress in this field since the time of Greek mathematics.

In 1801 Gauss published his first book named “Disquisitiones Arithmeticae”, with the financial help of the Duke of Brunswick. Most of the sections of this book discussed number theory.

In June of 1801, the astronomer Zach published the orbital positions of Ceres, which included Gauss’s predictions for the orbit of this celestial body and turned out to be correct.

In 1809, he published his second book “Theoria motus corporum coelestium in sectionibus conicis Solem ambientium”. This book was a profound two volume thesis on the movement of celestial bodies. Gauss continued to contribute to theoretical astronomy until the year 1817. He continued making his own observations until he was seventy.

In 1818, Friedrich Gauss was asked to create a geodesic survey of the state of Hanover. He accepted the job willingly and was in personal charge of the survey. To get some help in the survey, Gauss invented the heliotrope, which reflected the Sun’s rays using mirrors and a small telescope.
