Comparison of Violence in the Movies

In France, the television channels are equipped with alarm, warning viewers about "the films of violence." What caused such a powerful return of violence to the screens?

The debate on this subject arises regularly. Why do they acquire an unprecedented scale this time? The same questions always appear: where is the threshold that cannot move, so that the audience did not succumb to the temptation of such actions?

Some people say that there is nothing new under the black hate sun of big Hollywood studios. For others, on the contrary, contemporary images are the latest screen image. Moralists-censors and anarchist-liberals clash in polemics with any results. However, at first glance it seems to be repeating itself, this controversy now gets another turn. The aesthetic decay of fabricating images combined with devastating metamorphosis in society. As a result, a paradoxical image viewer, which all the more greedily absorbs "the portrayed cruelty", the more it tends to withdraw from.

A tendency of transition from film-image to the image of the TV, only to obey the laws of the visual, appeared by itself.

Violence is no longer limited with the scope of the genre (movies about the war, a series of black, western and so on) and narrative schemes that framed it, inviting the viewer to experience something cruel. For example, "Dark Noon" Philip Ridley fairy tale transforms codes in emotional and physical brutality of Gothic terror; the final episode is a kind of hallucinogenic apocalypse violence here reaches "travel under the influence of drugs."

So, if the violence is not experienced as a special kind of experiment, it can be a "natural state", in relation to which it is impossible to establish any distance and from which you cannot get in by any other way, but to become the strongest.

Our democratic societies timidly turn away from violence in our life, but watching it on the screen, not knowing how to deal with it.

Another trend is associated with movies, often very brutal, about a possible withdrawal from the violence. Here, violence is not a fatal inevitability.

We are far removed from the old kind of catharsis, from the use of violence as a demonstration of purgatory excessive passions. The screens are filled with psychopaths and protect the person who is afraid of violence, but does not stop to look at it. "I do not have anything to do with what I see" - this is the paradoxical lesson of modern violence of violent images. So we lose our ability to deal with violence and cruelty.
