Leaving Your Comfort Zone

In scientific literature, comfort zone is referred to as the kind of behavior that lets you stay at a low anxiety level. All the activities you are used to doing every day, such as preparing dinner, going to work or playing with your children are within your comfort zone. They do not make you feel stressed or uneasy, and you often do them automatically.

Although staying in one’s comfort zone is very convenient and stress-free, a little of anxiety can be useful. It will push us to achieve progress and to improve our performance. A certain level of anxiety will let us enter our learning zone and fulfill some task more successfully and faster. However, this is only true for the tasks which are not very difficult. If the task is too hard and the level of anxiety is too high, performance drops significantly, because we enter our panic zone. That is why we should not go too far away from our zone of comfort if we want to succeed.

The benefits of leaving the comfort zone are as follows. First of all, the mixture of anxiety and some self-doubt lead us to personal growth. This is especially true of if we know we are about to reach success. For instance, such outdoor activities as rock climbing and skydiving can be very exciting. They make us feel anxiety and awkwardness but upon completion we get a great feeling of achievement and our base levels of confidence are increased.

Besides, our comfort zone will also grow if we do new things which give us the feeling of slight excitement. In case one’s comfort zone is small, meaning that there are not many things one can do without being stressed, this person will either be anxious too often or will miss out on a lot of the excitement life offers. Getting out of one’s comfort zone regularly will increase the number of things one is comfortable with.

Another benefit of leaving one’s comfort zone is that doing new things motivates us and helps us learn. The levels of dopamine (the chemical responsible for the feeling of reward) increase when we are doing something new. Research also shows that novelty improves our memory and increases the opportunities for learning, because our brain becomes more flexible.

Motivational studies claim that we are actually looking for “productive discomfort”, because we are not productive if we are too comfortable, and we are equally unproductive if we are too uncomfortable. That is why it is essential to find the golden mean with the acceptable anxiety levels which will help us grow and expand our comfort zone.
