Macbeth Rise to Power: you can do this too

Lady Macbeth’s character happens to be extremely complicating. Moreover, it tends to change throughout the play. What burst out as a struggle for power and a longing to shred her femininity transforms her into what she fears most of all – a guilt ridden weakling.

In the beginning, we observe Lady Macbeth’s reaction to the news of her husbands’ success as well as King Duncan’s visit. It drastically ignites her everlasting lust for power. Lady Macbeth passionately talks about wanting all of the cold blooded aspects. She finds herself capable of murdering King Duncan with no remorse. This woman sees herself as possessing these qualities more than her husband, and due to this fact, she wishes to shed her womanhood. Macbeth’s obviously a very bitter female. She often refers to her unique role as a female, both emotionally and physically in negative ways. When commenting on her husband’s lack of gall, she states that she would make a better male than he.

In spite of the fact, she’s still a very strong female, during Act II, Scene II, we observe the first signs of weakness in Lady Macbeth’s character. She’s providing an excuse for not murdering Duncan on her own. As we see, that’s not the same Lady Macbeth, who would bash a kid’s brain in in the beginning of the play. Throughout the play, her character grows stronger as Lady Macbeth keeps regressing. It even gets to where Macbeth won’t include his spouse in his villainous schemes, where it was Lady Macbeth who was implementing these cunning schemes in his head in the first place. As a matter of fact, the two characters switch roles. When taking a backseat to her husband Lady Macbeth almost becomes a sort of wallpaper for the rest of the play. The turning point for her is when she finds out about her husband’s slaying of Macduff’s family. Lady Macbeth realizes that it’s all a result of her ongoing greed for power. Exactly power led to the corruption of her husband and enabled her to create a monster out of a worthy man.

In this state, Lady Macbeth turns to sleepwalking that reveals her guilt in Act V, scene i. The choking guilt along with paranoia eventually leads to her violent death at her own hands.

As readers we are certainly eager to know what happened to that happy female that Lady Macbeth once was. We’re also interested to learn what motivated this drastic change in her character. From my point of view, it was exactly her enormous ambition. It definitely kept destroying her personality.
