Important Forms in Plato's Metaphysics

What are the forms used by Plato in his famous metaphysics? Why is he so sure that they all are real? What is his personal opinion on relationships between objects in people’s sense and these forms? How does the well-known myth in the cave illustrate his view of the reality? Is this theory valid? Why? There are other questions asked by readers and researchers on a regular basis.

When taking the forms of metaphysics used by Plato, readers should focus on his unique idea of nonphysical and physical realities. There are certain ideas that some things can be different than people perceive them to be. For instance, when looking at a circle drawing on the paper, people can say that it’s a circle, but the reality can be different. This means that Plato believes that what people look at is the representation of what things are supposed to look like.

If to go back to the example with a circle, it tends to have certain blotches on ink and imperfections that make it non-perfect. That’s why Plato suggests that some things can be true only in people’s mind, and it’s his idea of the nonphysical reality. The main concept is that we think that specific things are real, but they are not in the reality because they are just some representation of the things that can exist only in our mind.

Another effective example used by Plato is his mathematical proofs. People already know that many mathematical concepts are true only in their mind, but they are not true on the paper. A drawing that represents a certain shape is not really it because it’s just some image drawn on this paper with the ink that tends to be imperfect. That’s why Plato believes that there are different degrees of the reality, and they all are based on the personal perceptions of people.

Their senses are responsible for showing them the reality they see, and these non-literal ideas are all about these senses. People’s unique perceptions of things are the ones that they represent to them. You can look at some picture in the book and understand that there is no such actual thing in the reality, so it’s just your mere perception of what you are supposed to see. In addition, another interesting example offered by Plato is the concept of justice and it’s connected with the nonphysical and universal reality. Justice is not connected with shapes, but it’s all about the moral qualities of people and it exists only in their mind.

What are the forms used by Plato in his famous metaphysics? Why is he so sure that they all are real? What is his personal opinion on relationships between objects in people’s sense and these forms?
