An Overview of David Cronenberg’s the Dead Zone

The Dead Zone is a feature film of 1983 directed by David Cronenberg. The film is an adaptation of Stephen King’s work of the same name. The film won two prizes at international film festivals.

The plot of the movie tells how a resident of a small town in Maine, an elementary school teacher Johnny Smith meets with his colleague Sarah Bracknell. Together, they ride rides and have fun, but then John starts having a headache and when he accompanies Sarah home she invites him to stay, but he politely refuses and goes home. On his way home he got in the rain. At the same time a truck driver could not cope with the control and the truck fell, blocking the road. John got into an accident.

John wakes up in the hospital, he has a sore throat and his body practically does not listen to him. An old doctor-neurologist tells him that he had been in a coma for five years. His parents visit him, not believing what had happened and he learns that his lover has married and had a baby. After a while, Johnny learns again how to walk. One day when a nurse comes to him she touched his hand and John sees a fire in the house and the girl, calling her mother. He tells the nurse about it, which saves the life of her daughter.

After hearing this story, the doctor thinks John has mental problems after an accident. However, John offers to arrange a test and takes his hand. John sees the war, people in rags, explosions, and gunfire. He sees the young woman putting a child into the car. It turns out that the woman John had seen is doctor’s mother, who he thought was long dead. But John tells him how to find her and the doctor dials a phone number and hears her voice.

John returns home. Suddenly, his beloved Sarah comes to see him, who is still in love with him. The local sheriff, who heard of John, comes to him for help, because he can’t solve a series of murders of young girls. John promises to do what he can. John gets scared and disappointed by recent events. He begins to lead a reclusive lifestyle and teach kids.

One day the US Senate candidate Greg Stillson came to the city. John meets him on the street and shakes hands. He sees how Stillson becomes president of the United States and starts the third world war. John realizes that it is worth to sacrifice his own life to stop him. During the celebrations, John tries to shoot at Stillson, but he covers himself with Sarah’s child. This moment was taken by photographers, which leads to the end of Stilson’s career and his suicide. John is wounded and he is dying without explaining anything to Sarah, but she still loves him and trusts him.
