In any play on one of the most important element is the act 1. In other words, it is like the introduction to the whole play, which will be read by people. Someone can consider, that result, culmination, has the most important meaning. But generally, the introduction is on the first place. Why does it happen so? We will see on the certain example to understand what the effectiveness of act 1 lies in.
Act 1 plays the role of portrait of the hysteria. It gives the whole imagination of what will be the most important in the play. Just imagine the small room, where the whole act is performed. There is a sick child, who lies on the bed. The childe suffers on the claustrophobic, and people around them are so upset, but conscious.
During the whole scene, main characters demonstrate their false faces. Readers are able to mention the changes in the languages of the bodies. Characters speak differently with each other, because it has a difference with them every of them talks. Firstly readers meet the man, who prays for his daughter’s life. He can’t believe that she lies on the bed and is unconscious. Samuel Parris, the second character, plays the role of outsider. He is a representative of puritanical society. Author adds this character because in the play Samuel induces the fear of the Devil among the people. John Proctor says a lot of critics to the Samuel, that’s why he always says that it is a conspiracy operation against him.
Many people among the characters of the play are considered to be the real Christians. In such way they think about themselves. But they know about and use a deceit, which is one of the main topics of the play. Woman whose name is Abigail is described as a good and bad person. Her good side is demonstrates to the majority of their small city. Being with her uncle, Abigail always denies the accusations of witchcraft. She behaves like everything what she has done before, was really harmful. She does her best to demonstrate how honest and clever she is. But at the same time, being with her peers, Abigail begins to threaten them and make them to do in such way as she says them. This element of contrast is used during the whole play, and author used it with different purposes. For example such method explains how different can be people in dependence of situation.
And in this case it is really important to show this method in the first act, so readers will understand the changes. It is easier to read the whole play, knowing about such contrast which is used by the author.
