Monster’s Ball Movie Review

Monster’s Ball is American romantic drama film of 2001 directed by Marc Forster and featuring Billy Bob Thornton, Halle Berry, Heath Ledger, and others. The film tells the story of a woman who falls in love with a widowed prison-guard after the execution of her husband.

Hank (played by Billy Bob Thornton) is proud of his rare profession and hopes that his son Sonny (played by Heath Ledger) will continue the family dynasty. For several generations, the men in their family have been working as butchers, including during the execution of the switch of the electric chair. Monster’s Ball, on a professional slang, means procedures that precede the execution. Due to the fact that everything in Hank’s life was imposed by his father, Hank hates him and the people around, including his own son. As once Hank’s father made him to be an executor, Hank himself makes his son to be an executioner too, without asking for his opinion.

But Sonny clearly can’t stand being an executioner. One day, after one of the condemned, who gave Sonny his last drawing, was executed, the execution shocked Sonny so much that he committed suicide in front of his father. It seems that it meant nothing for Hank, as he never loved his son, but still something had changed within him, as though the loss of the opportunity to continue the dynasty of executioners made disappear Hank’s obligation to do most of what he had done before.

Once, driving through a dark alley, Hank sees a black woman, whose son has been just hit by a car. Since childhood Hank’s father inculcated in him aversion to blacks, but despite this Hank still decides to help a woman, whose name is Leticia (played by Halle Berry). Thus he starts killing monsters inside himself. He quits his job and becomes a businessman. He falls in love with Letizia, whose son died. Hank changes his attitude to the people around him attitude, in particular towards the neighbors with a different skin color. The last monster is Hank’s father, but Hank sends him to a nursing home, and moves together with Laetitia.

At the end of the film Laetitia finds among Hank’s things a drawing of her husband who was executed. When she finds the drawings she understands their meaning. Leticia never mentions the drawings to Hank. Why not? Because it is time to move on or she understands why he didn’t tell her about that? Because she feels that the drawings would not exist if the artist didn’t like the subject or because she forgives? The movie doesn’t give an answer.
