My Adventure in the Wilderness

Just like many readers of my generation, my very first experience of the wilderness arose from the pages of a thrilling book. That’s The Winter Place. However, encounters with reality don’t make my adventures as the audience feels less meaningful. On the contrary, it seems to me that these early experiences of a literary wilderness have enriched my experience of the wild today. When I first set foot into the Finnish woods, it was impossible for me to get Tolkien out of my head. I did my best to hear elves singing in the woods. As I started writing my novel, I looked for both of these wild spaces. I mean the real wilderness of mountains and forests as well as the wilderness of books I treasure today.

Jean Craighead George’s My Side of the Mountain

I’m among the flocks of learners who first came across George’s marvelous book in grade school. Today, I’m used to looking back on it, as my first unique transformational reading experience. A 12-year-old boy Sam, residing in a small apartment bursting with family, has to escape to the Catskill Mountains for the purpose of making a new life for himself in the tempting wilderness. By the way, George renders his adventures, without relying on unsentimental and wonderfully detailed prose. On the contrary, the author makes the most of a bunch of illustrations, which seem to come right out of a survivalist’s handbook. These care and specificity for her subjects - both wilderness and Sam, drew me in as a faithful reader, and it this book alive in my imagination even today

Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock

It goes without saying Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock is my all-time favorite fantasy novel. Set in the years right after the second world war, the novel follows a wounded veteran’s return to his own family estate, sitting on the edge of a tiny patch of ancient forest. You seem to be already intrigued, don’t you? Here, the author of this book gives us a long-awaited wilderness, which is both psychological and physical. It boasts finite edges and endless depth at the same time. The author’s magical woods can be circled in a day, though our protagonist finds that he’s capable of walking through them for months without coming out the other side. That’s an extremely exciting conceit, one capturing the seemingly elastic nature of space and time when leaving the marked trails and stepping out into the trees. Furthermore, it’s a suitable metaphor for reading. Summarizing I can say that it’s not just another good book, its endless depth and finite edges will make you get lost there.
