Every person, who is passionate about literature and theatre, knows what tragedy is. For those who don’t know or want to get more information tragedy is one of the drama branches that is based on some human serious problems or even suffering and catharsis. Catharsis is the purifications of emotions, most of all fear and pity, through art that results in restoration and renewal.

This genre comes from ancient Greece. It was very popular among people those days. One of the main philosophers who did a great research of literature genres, including tragedy, was Aristotle. It is also necessary to mention Shakespeare, who was very successful in creating tragedies. Since ancient times, it has been changing and developing, but the main rules of a tragedy are still the same.

Here are listed some basic rules of tragedies.

  • Most of the tragedies are written for male characters.
  • Tragedy is usually presented in a simple manner. All the situations are understood from the point of view good and bad, beautiful and ugly. In tragedies, everything should have only one meaning and every approach to the problem should be clear.
  • The tragic hero is usually a famous person or a person who has great power or some extraordinary qualities. The destiny of every tragic hero is to lose everything, to fall from his height. In this part, he always should demonstrate emotions of fear and pity.
  • Tragic heroes respond only with strong emotions such as pride, grief, lust. This often causes extremist reactions.
  • The tragic hero except great qualities also has his own weaknesses. His weaknesses become a reason of his problems and of his falling. It is never a destiny or some accident influence his life, only his own choice.
  • The hero does not fully deserve his misfortune. His is a great person and people will remember his greatness for a long time. His weakness and his fall didn’t do him a bad man.
  • In the end of a tragedy a hero dies. Yet, before his death, he learns some important lesson.

Time changed a lot in tragedy, but the main peculiarities are still here. In ancient times tragedies were very popular. Ancient Greeks believed that a good tragedy, perfectly played on a stage could change people for better. These are the reasons, why even now tragedies are so popular among people.
