The Old Man and the Sea and True Grit

"The Old Man and the Sea" is not just a usual story that can be understands from the first sight; it is a parable, glorifying man, praising his courage and perseverance.

The plot of the novel is very simple. Old Cuban fisherman Santiago goes to the sea for fishing. After eighty-four days of fruitless search he finds a huge swordfish. It is so big and strong that when it took hook, it was sailing far out to sea, carrying the old boat. Duel between a fisherman and a giant fish lasted for three days and three nights. Eventually Santiago wins, but predatory sharks devour its prey.

It would seem that the hero must be humbled, broken by their defeat, angry at the whole world. But no!

This story is probably so worrying because Hemingway is very precise and specific in describing the life and struggle of the old fisherman. Calm, measured, avoiding the high words, the writer say all the details. The writer arts Santiago with a huge fish, transmits his thoughts about the meaning of human life, the unity of man and nature. He points out that humans are not the masters of the world, but a part of it, and we obey the same laws, which are obeyed by the sunsets and sunrises, and sea waves, and wonderful fish, sharks and saber-toothed predators.

The image of Santiago, the man-laborer, grows up to the symbol of Man. "Big fish" is a symbol of a great goal, which is the meaning of human life and embody predatory sharks are the evil inclination. In order to a decent life man defends its right to self-esteem in the struggle against this evil.

The writer does not inspire us that it's easy. The strength of his character is that when he is defeated, he does not despair, do not lose faith in him and, more importantly, continues to believe on the ultimate triumph of good start.

Santiago is going to continue its work with the boy. The image of the boy in the story is very important: it embodies the belief in the future, the idea that man is not alone in the struggle of life.

The description of the old man's fight with a big fish is unforgettable. When, straining to the utmost force, Santiago continues to duel with her, confident that he will not back down. "Fish, - he called softly, - I'm will not part with you until I die."

The author was trying to convince us that man is not created in order "to be defeated." That's why the old man does not remain idle when sharks attack his fish. Though he is old and exhausted, although his hand is wounded, he continues to fight.

The novel has not a tragic ending. Exhausted, weakened but undefeated old man still gets to the port.
