It is the very beginning of the new era. White jury retired to take a verdict to a black men accused of raping a white women. And instead of five minutes to come up with a verdict of guilty, they deliberated for several hours. However, black men had still been convicted, but they were still deliberating! Thus, it means the era of change. Or does the lawyer Atticus Finch was very convincing in his defense speech that shook the minds of white jury not only by eloquence, but also by evidence of innocence of Tom Robinson?
No wonder they say that all genius is simple. The novel seems very simple at first glance. With that, there rises a bunch of philosophical and social problems, especially racism, but it’s surprisingly easy to read. Sometimes it is even too easy. But still, what an original idea to keep the story on behalf of the girl, and even present the story with all the childlike, because of which answers on many questions are found quickly and they are simple. However, this childish way of narration doesn’t give the childlike naivety, at least in the main line. And if the innocence still occurs, it is only for the sake of humor. Atticus Finch is first seen in a somewhat misrepresenting point of view. It seems that this is a man “in a case”, who was raising two children as a major life adversity, to which he has no abilities. The more we read, the more obvious became the fact that it is not so. Atticus seems to be the most honorable and strong man in all Meykomb. He is so strong that goes against public opinion. He has strength to stands against the crowd. He's in a position to endure a slap into the face and does not answer. Still, he is a wonderful father, despite his own phrase, told to his sister, "I raise them as best as I can."
The question is, where is the main intrigue of the novel? In what will turn a lawsuit against Tom? Not at all, it was absolutely predictable, even at a time when white jury goes to deliberate just after a fiery speech of Atticus. No, not the less than the judgment we want to know why Boo Radley does not go out of the house. Maybe he's a freak? Maybe he has Alzheimer's? Or maybe Parkinson's? What has he appeared in this novel for? Oh yes, to play a key role.
As a Mockingbird, it still was killed, and this is one more global idea of the novel - where you can move the line, where is the line between justice and injustice... No, not so, between justice and cruelty. This book fill our mind with great number of thoughts and ideas and we understand that is time to change our values and our attitude to the world around us.
