The Depths of Hurt in Home Burial by Robert Frost

It hurts when the love is leaving you. But above all, it hurts when you are helpless if your loved one has passed away. No one can realise how deep your sorrow is and no one knows when the pain will abate. Home Burial is the story of parents who have been suffering the grief each in their own way.

Home Burial is a blank verse poem of an American poet Robert Frost. This unrhymed manner makes his poems particularly expressive. In Home Burial almost each meter has five pairs of stressed syllables, thus while reading the lines the reader feels a kind of rhythm. There are also lines without meters that make people’s words especially expressive because in real life we do not speak like that. Such interweaving in the verse helps the reader hear and feel the string of human’s soul that is torn with grief.

The verse is a talk of a married couple who has lost their first-born child. He is buried in the family graveyard just near the house they live. Both are passing through the grievous loss but each of them is experiencing it differently. By the woman’s expressive and at times rising tone we feel that she is very emotional and essentic. Moreover, she is constantly talking about her baby recollecting the horrible funeral scene. The reader sees her at the staircase leaving the house when she suddenly meets her husband. He does not let his desperate wife leave ensuring her in his true love. Their talk is serious, passionate, and intense and interrupted by the woman's intention to go away. Blaming her husband of being cold-hearted during their child’s funeral she has decided to break up. She is angry with him so much that judging by externals she is not able to notice how deeply he is suffering.

The grief of the woman is apparent while the man has buried his feelings deeply in his heart. Her offence is big enough to erect the high wall between her and him as she cannot forgive him being indifferent to the death of their son. Despite her efforts, the man still hopes to recover their relations. He says he loves her and promises to be reliable and protective thus, attempting to console her heart. Finally, the woman leaves and he gives his word to force her back.

To my mind, no one can measure how deep they suffer the pain, however, the man is particularly reeling from the loss as he has lost the child and is about to lose his love. Despite the depths of hurt are sometimes invisible; one should be more attentive to the feelings of those close to you.
