For all people, energy is one of their basic necessities mainly because it enables them to convert one thing into another. A big part of the energy used nowadays comes from all kinds of fossil fuels. Basically, these are naturally occurring fuels of the organic nature and formed by the decomposition of animals and plants. All fossil fuels are divided into 3 categories, including natural gas, oil, and coal, and they all are important for people’s everyday lives. The main reason is that they provide almost 90% of the primary energy and 70% of electricity that is used by consumers.
Besides, fossil fuels make it possible for all ships, cars, trains, airplanes, and other powered machines to function properly. They are even called a universal currency between the US and other countries because they are traded on a regular basis. The main problem is that people’s demands keep growing every year because they tend to earn more money, purchase more things, so they start using more energy. This tendency is called the wealth effect and it makes people wonder how long these natural resources will last.
Coal is one of the most abundant fossil fuel, and it’s primarily used to generate the necessary electricity. It’s burned in specific power plants to produce the electricity used by people. It’s worth noting that the materials that form fossil fuels vary greatly as every layer is buried. As a result of such variations and time periods of forming coal, there are different types of this fossil fuel created, and each one burns differently and produces different emission types.
The first one is Lignite, and it’s the latest portion of coal reserves in the world in addition to giving off the least amount of energy. Another type is Subbituminous and it gives off a bit more energy than Lignite when burned. Besides, there are Bituminous that is a bit better than the above-mentioned coal types, and the last one is Anthracite, which gives off the highest amount of energy while being very rare.
Natural gas is another valuable fossil fuel that people have, and it’s ideal because of its simple transportation, easiness of use, and cleanliness. This natural resource is mostly made up of methane, which is an odorless and colorless gas formed naturally from decaying of different organic matters. People often use it for heating, cooking, and other household purposes these days.
