The Assassination of Duncan in Macbeth

Duncan the king of Scotland was killed in the castle of Macbeth at midnight on 12th November 1556.

There are several reasons why Macbeth decides to kill the King. The witches predicted that he will be king and since Duncan is already king, so how can Macbeth become one? The answer is obvious — he has to kill Duncan. This is the first mistake of Macbeth. The witches predicted things from future, so Macbeth, probably, would become king anyway. Since he becomes so obsessed with this idea, he decides to take the matter into his own hands. Everything could have been differently if he just allows things to develop naturally. There may also be another opinion that Macbeth was really predicted to kill Duncan, which made his king.

Macbeth is also encouraged by Lady Macbeth. She desires power crazily, which makes her impatient. She tells him that if he is a real man, he will do this. The Lady uses all sorts of feminine manipulation to make Macbeth commit the murder.

When the murder is about to be committed, Lady Macbeth said that Duncan reminds her of her father and that is why she cannot kill him, forcing Macbeth to do it himself.

After what he did, Macbeth certainly feels paranoia and guilt. Still, when the time he needs to commit a murder one more time, he does not to hesitate. He is really willing to do everything to become king. The murder of Duncan is only the starting point because soon Macbeth decides to order Banquo and Fleance's murder. He considers them threats to his goal. Although Banquo is killed, Fleance manages to get away.

Macbeth meets Banquo's ghost at a dinner in his home. This means that his paranoia progresses and also he is close to the loss of sanity. However, he is very angry with the murderers who allowed Fleance to get away. He knows that it does not allow his plans to come true with no problems. At the same time, his relationship with Lady Macbeth, that used to be strong and supportive, changes dramatically. Everything is due to his tragic flaw of thirsting for power. He does not want to share the additional planned murders, and this causes a major breakdown in their relationship.

Probably, Macbeth would not commit the murder if not the prediction. But since he started to believe that the witches told him the truth, he becomes extremely obsessed with his desire to be king. He crossed the line that he would not, probably, cross if not the witches. Unfortunately, this was a mistake and that is why Macbeth with his greed for power ruined his life.
