Reframing the Constitution: a few words about US internal politics

It’s a common occurrence that the vast majority of US citizens are used to venerating the American Constitution. However, one UT professor is assured that this country needs a change.

The founders knew for sure that their handiwork, though commendable in many regards, turned to be flawed. So, in Article V, they included procedures for amending the Constitution, such as calling a brand-new constitutional convention. In fact, we don’t just dishonor them by simply looking at our founding document with fresh eyes. On the contrary, we are eager to brand ourselves as unworthy kids by refusing to take seriously that sacred requirement. We believe that American urgently requires another Constitutional convention. We’re going to explain this statement here below.

It has already become a sort of cliché of contemporary US political analysis that our national political system happens to be dysfunctional. To confirm this point there’re many ways, varying from the sheer failure of Congress to pass a particular law to the general alienation, which much of the US public feels from what needs to be their government.

As I previously wrote, polling data shows that more than four out of five US citizens don’t appreciate Congress, while 63% are convinced that America’s going in the wrong direction. It’s also become obvious that elections rarely generate decisive results. It might be the outcome of divided government, where at least one of the two houses of Congress is held by members of opposing political parties, or of the now-routine filibuster, where a small number of senators are capable of torpedoing legislation backed by the president as well as the majority of the Senate. National elections seem to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic, because our gigantic government is absolutely unable to steer clear of the icebergs, which are quite visible. We mightn’t be able to agree on what those particualr icebergs are, though the national consensus is that our ship is off-course.

How on earth did we get such an awful outcome? Thousands of reasons have been proposed, ranging from economic as well as demographic changes to the rise of partisan television news and also talk radio, to say nothing of the ever-increasing role of the most prosperous folks in political campaigns. Certainly, many more factors need to be taken into consideration. However, there’s something else anybody is hardly talking about. It’s the role that the American Constitution itself plays in our political system.

It’s a common occurrence that the vast majority of US citizens are used to venerating the American Constitution. However, one UT professor is assured that this country needs a change.

The founders knew for sure that their handiwork, though commendable in many regards, turned to be flawed.
