Evil Forces of Drugs Influencing Teenagers

The infamous teenage years appear to be a prime time for tasting new things and asserting one’s independence. As teens make their tough way toward adulthood, they often become tempted by a variety of adult activities. They are eager to follow their parents' lead. Teens passionately want to try things their pals have already tried. Establishing their own identities is their number one concern. Drugs and alcohol often get involved in this mix.

A great number of teens turn to alcohol, prescription drugs, marijuana, club drugs as well as other substances as a means of coping with stress. This stuff helps them to relate to their peers and also rebel against authority. A 2015 research conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse showed that more than 58% of 12th graders had already consumed alcohol and almost 24% had taken illicit drugs in the past year. Teenagers along with young adults often get involved with alcohol as well as drugs for many reasons, including:

  • Acceptance: Their parents or role models do it, so they naturally want to feel themselves accepted by those they look up to.
  • Curiosity: They’re eager to find out what it feels like to be intoxicated, drunk or high.
  • Independence: They’d like to make their own decisions and demonstrate their independence.
  • Defiance: They wish to rebel against rules placed on them.
  • Risk-taking behaviors: That’s just a desire to send out a call for help.
  • Pleasure: They’re willing to feel good. Teenagers normally deal with a rich mix of emotions, so drugs can assist them in numbing any pain, making them feel better when they’re facing tough times.
  • Thrill-seeking activities: Teens are willing to face something different from numbness.
  • Boredom: Sometimes they’re bored to tears and alcohol and drugs give them a feeling of excitement they really lack.
  • Peer pressure: Their pals are doing it or making them do the same.

At any age, human beings are eager to be liked and also accepted by folks around them. It also applies for teens and adolescents, going through a process of transformation from childhood right into adulthood. They are still discovering who they’re, and via the confusion it often causes, want more and more to be accepted by their peers.

To properly understand why teenagers are so likely to give into peer pressure, NIDA completed a research study on how teenagers think about both risks and rewards closely connected with their decisions.
