Nowadays there is a question which concerns the penalties for crack and powder cocaine. By the way, it is not still clear, whether they should be similar with each other. And the second question, which has no answer, is: maybe penalties should be changed and be others than they are now? Laws and government are changed, but the penalties are still the same. Is it right? Or maybe someone should change the situation?
It is a real problem, because now the possession of 500 gr of crack cocaine has the same penalty as possession of five hundreds grams of powder cocaine. It is well-known fact, that there are more dealers among African Americans who prefer powder cocaine. And it explains the situation from the critical point of view. In addition, there are harsher penalties for those African Americans who share crack cocaine. The problem is that no one wants to work with this case, and classify the penalties for dealers. But ordinary people consider that penalties should be the same in spite of whether it was powder or crack cocaine. It is understandable, because any kind of this substance makes a terrible influence in the whole society. Dealers spend lots of money to buy at least few grams of cocaine. Due to this almost of them become homeless with the time.
And the true problem is not because African Americans use this drug more than white people. The problem is that this substance kills the whole generations. It breaks the families, careers and plans for future.
It was the strange case in 1993 in the court in Nebraska. The chief guide gave four crack dealers so short term for prison. Of course, they were African Americans. This case was discussed a lot, and even now sometimes people remember this with different emotions. And, of course, in most cases ordinary residents can’t understand how it can be. How dealers can be given the so short term, when they used crack cocaine.
Unfortunately, this problem hasn’t the solution still. Sometimes there are real debates on this topic, and sometimes the situation is getting to be calmer. Dealers continue to work with cocaine, and no one knows which penalty will be given to them. The situation is a little bit strange, because this substance should be forbidden everywhere. Lots of people in the world are dependent on it, and they do their best to get at least a pinch of powder cocaine. Some of them even use this substance for cigarettes. Anyway, it is a true threat for society in spite of the nation or country. This is a problem of humanity, and only we should fight with this.
