From the first pages you can understand that here it is, the story of modern Romeo and Juliet, that love passionately and almost die in one day. But if you look closely, it does not much remain of Shakespeare. Parents are not at odds, more than that, right from the birth of children they were best friends. Children knew each other from birth. They played together, play pranks together, we grew up together... were best friends. They became adolescence and fell in love. And the parents were waiting their children would get married sooner or later and bind their lives with each other forever. But... There was a call from the hospital in a very ordinary Thursday. It was the trying of double suicide. Our Juliet is dead, and Romeo would be accused of murder from day to day. And it begins a long and tedious litigation. Woe of the parents was heartbreaking. They saved their money for her education, but now they had to spend it on the funeral. Other expected release of a beloved son and admission to a good university, but instead of sweet agony parting, when the chick takes off from the parental nest, they had to visit their son in prison.
You can go crazy. You can move in strontium. You can love no matter what, and fight, fight, fight. It is said that the mountain shows the essence of the person. No. It lays bare the soul and turns all.
But what has actually happened? Why the ideal children were in such a position? Why is the girl who has it all, and present, and happy past and a bright future came to thoughts of death, that there was no way out? Or maybe the boy who loved her madly, wanted to solve their problems in this monstrous manner? This all lies on their lives that were too ideal. Everything had to be on top. It was the situation in the past that went unnoticed, but broke inside. It was a lot of pressure of ideal. Not knowing what to do with her feelings she came to the deadlock. There was only one man who could help. But what help did the modern Juliet ask for?.. And Romeo did not know what to do. That's all. And then there was no one to help two wayward children.
Once again I convinced that Jodi Picoult is the talented author. The book is based on its standard form: we see the accident itself. We are transported to the distant past, to understand how the events unfolded. We see the story from the point of view of many heroes. And finally, we meet in court to administer justice. And often, knowing the ins and outs of all the details and say "guilty" or "innocent" is simply impossible…
