Dickens’ Great Expectations

The renowned novel “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens was written between December 1860 and September 1861. This fruitful novelist published his book in the form of series, and each book was impatiently awaited by readers. Even the people close to the author are unaware of that this novel dwells upon the facts of the authors’ own life.

The complicated plot of “Great Expectations” describes the life of Pip – the boy who has no parents and is brought up by his cruel sister and her kind-hearted husband. Joe, the husband of Pip’s sister, works as a blacksmith and is the only source of love and care for Pip. Pip does not treat him as a father, but as an older brother, or somebody equal to himself. The idea of “equality” is one of the threads of the plot of this novel. It reveals the consciousness of Victorian class and its idea of what a “gentleman” should be like. One of the goals Dickens pursued by writing this novel was to smooth over the impression from his previous protagonist, “gentleman” Copperfield, who was snobby towards his co-workers at the factory. He wanted to show a more noble character. The theme of gentility is also developed when Pip finds out that he has a mysterious benefactor he will receive funds from.

In “Great Expectations” Dickens was trying to combine the genre of mystery with the psychological investigation of what makes us respect and admire a person. The episode of the novel where Pip wanted to “climb the ladder” was speaking vividly about the operation of Victorian society. This hint showed the society’s focus on wealth and social status, rather than inner qualities of a person.

The author was also hesitant about the ending of the story of love presented in the novel. His primary decision was not to let Pip marry Estella, the girl from a higher social class. However, later Dickens offered the possibility of their marriage to please the audience.

The reader can feel Dickens’ own bitter view of life in this story, nevertheless, no matter how desperate the ending is, we can still sense hope and happiness if we read between the lines. This is the ambivalence of his own worldview that Dickens shares with the reader.

The secret of the novel’s popularity is the author’s talent to continuously please the readers and to combine his own views and tastes with the ones of the audience. Vivid characters of the book, twists and turns of the plot and the first person narrative style make “Great Expectations” an engaging novel for new generations of readers.
