Joseph Mallord William Turner's Early and Late Works

J.M.W. Turner was a famous English landscape painter whose influence on such a movement as Impressionism cannot be overrated. Joseph Turner was born in London on April 23, 1775. His father was a barber and his mother died when he was a child. At the age of 10 he was sent to his uncle to Brentford, Middlesex, where he attended school. He drew his first pictures when he was very young. Some of his first pictures were done when he was twelve. At the age of 14, J.M.W. Turner started the practice he continued all his life. He would travel England and Europe during the summer and he would make notes during these journeys. He used these notes as material for his paintings. He was absolutely impressed by the powers of nature and transferred this passion into ecstatic beauty. It is well-know that J.M.W. Turner a Romantic painter and as leading Romantic painter he mostly paid his attention on color and lighting. Turner's works had a big influence on the Impressionist movement. During his career, he remained a very popular painter and he acquired a very large fortune from his commissions. He is described as the best landscaper in 19th century. Turner showed an evolution in his painting style throughout his long career. Nevertheless, he stayed true to the genre of landscape, but Turner started to pay more attention effects of light and color and less attention to the details. Early years: In his early works, Turner painted Romantic subjects by emphasizing luminosity and atmosphere. Turner paid more attention to details in his early years, as compared to his later years. Middle years: J.M.W. Turner’s style shifted in 1880s. His painting become more atmospheric. Turner focused more on colours than the details of the actual topography. For instance St. Mawes at the Pilchard Season (1812). Advanced years: As the time went on Turner paid less attention to the details. His Norham Castle, Sunrise and With A Boat Between Headlands are both examples of slightly brushed canvases, mere color notations. Some of Turner’s later paintings approaches the subject of modern technology. He shows us sail ships that were soon to be replaced by steam-powered vessels. He also painted the railway in Rain, Steam, and Speed-the Great Western Railway (1844). However, Turner took a strong liking to the marine activity. This subject often encountered in his work.
