Fahrenheit 451 - Clarisse and Mildred

Clarisse and Mildred are the characters of the science-fiction novel “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury. Let us see if these women have any similarities and differences.

These characters are different in many ways, and most likely the author depicted them that way deliberately. Mildred symbolizes the mindlessness of their society, and Clarisse is a symbol of what that society is missing – deep thinking, and not superficial one, living a real life, and the desire for happiness. Their similarities are hard to see. We can find them in the facts that they are both female, they both play a significant role in Montag's life, and they both inspire Montag’s change. Clarisse initiates this change, and Mildred causes his full rebellion as she abandons him.

In terms of their beliefs and deeds, these characters do not have many similarities. They both believe in Montag, but the reasons for it are different. Clarisse believes in his kindness. She sees him as a man who cares enough to listen to her, and this makes him outstanding and different from all other people. Mildred, in her turn, believes in Montag's stability and knows that he is able to provide well for her and let her live a decent lifestyle.

Both of these women believe in doing things that please them. Clarisse likes asking questions about life and talking to her family. When Montag talks to Clarisse, she asks him if he ever reads the books he confiscates and burns. She wants to know what he thinks. Because of her intellectual curiosity and interest in human feelings, Clarisse inspires Montag to later bring books into the house. Clarisse is the one who is responsible for the metamorphosis of Montag. Due to her questions and interest, he moves from a simple fireman to a person who reads and protects books. It is Clarisse who has sparked Montag's interest in learning about the human experience through reading.

Mildred enjoys watching TV and spending time with her friends. She is concerned with watching the large screens in her living room and interacting with characters on the screen.

Besides, they both enjoy driving, even though their approaches to driving are different. Mildred likes driving when she feels sad. She tells Montag about her love for speed. Clarisse, in her turn, likes watching people drive in the street and wants to understand if they know what grass and flowers are like, because they never see them as they are going too fast.
