Gender Differences in Communications: a Scientific Fact or a Myth?

As we tend to believe, men and women have different perceptions of the world. This also usually applies to the process of communication.

Communicational patterns of a man and a woman are sometimes so different that it almost makes it difficult to reach an understanding between the two. Women prefer to talk to organize or develop their own thoughts. The more detailed and referenced the conversation if, the more satisfaction it gives a woman as she gets an opportunity to open up and unpack her emotional baggage. Men, on the contrary, tend to think through their ideas, not speak them out. When it comes to communication, they are mostly interested in things that can be used for specific actions or that call for immediate realization. If the topic of a conversation has little or no practical application, it is more likely to be classified by a man as non-essential.

Even though we all know that the observations of psychologists in respect to this topic are quite controversial, people still—consciously or unconsciously—tend to change their communication patterns depending on whom they talk to.

Yet, the whole concept of differences in communications between men and women is full of stereotypical assumptions with no scientific grounds, but rather social stigma. There is a belief that women seek more communication rather than men. A woman’s desire to "chat" is so huge, they say, that if during the day she doesn't get an opportunity to fulfill it (with colleagues, friends, or family members) it will later have a negative impact on her psychological well-being. Nonetheless, it is of a human nature to seek to share ideas and experiences, successes and failures, emotions and feeling. One’s aspiration to talk has nothing to do with their sex or gender, but with one’s psychology. This way, some women tend to not be quite closed off, and some men tend to be very open, and vice versa.

The spirit of competition is equally inherent in both men and women. However, its development is strongly affected by one’s cultural environment. Gender roles put by a society majorly affect the way women and men communicate. If one’s cultural surrounding leans towards patriarchy, it is obvious that men would be expected to communicate in a more pragmatic, pushy way, and vice versa. Yet, at the end of the day, we all are just people and we are able to find a common language with each other, regardless of any labels that the society out on us.
