Influence of Birth Order on Personality

It is known that birth order influences the qualities of our character. The interdependence of birth order and personality traits has been studied by psychologists for over a century and some interesting results have been recorded.

Research shows that first-borns are more responsible and achievement-oriented then later-borns, who are more socially successful than their older siblings. First-borns try to be the best at everything they do. The parents who have had their first child are rather inconsistent – on the one hand, they are overprotective and anxious, and on the other one, they are demanding and encourage their child to perform better.

Birth order does not fully determine one’s personality, however it does cause competition between children for their parents’ attention.

Alfred Adler was the one who studied deeply the impact of birth order on personality. He mentioned that the first-born child was "dethroned" by the birth of the second child. He reasoned that it was natural for first-born children to identify strongly with power and authority. They want to keep their superior status when the younger child is born. His research showed that first-borns want to imitate their parents, to protect their siblings and feel responsible for them. They are rather controlling, punctual, organized and conservative.

Adler claims that middle children are more cooperative then firstborns, since they share parental attention with another child. They are constantly stimulated to catch up with older ones. They are often more talented and successful then first-borns. Adler believes that second-born children are friendlier and more agreeable with others, and are also more accepting of change, adventure, and more rebellious then the first-borns.

The youngest child normally receives the most attention and is spoiled. Mother usually pours all her attention on the baby. Youngest children tend to be outgoing, charming, and like to make family members laugh. They are lovable and affectionate, and strive to get attention by all means. The emotions of the last-born child are unstable: he can be happy at a certain moment, but the next moment gets rebellious and difficult. As they grow up, they want to find their niche and to show the rest of the family that they are also capable of achieving success in life. They are often narcissistic and use every chance to “shine” in public, at the same time suffering from the sense of self-doubt.
