Self-Reliance of Ralph Waldo Emerson

Self-Reliance was written by Ralph Waldo Emerson in 1841. The author is an American essayist and transcendentalist philosopher. His work contains the statement that each individual needs to avoid false consistency and conformity. Each person should follow his or her own ideas and instincts.

For the first time, Self-Reliance was presented by Ralph Waldo Emerson as part of a sermon in 1830 just after his first marriage. His wife named Ellen was sick with tuberculosis.

In his work Self-Reliance, Emerson offers an idea of self-reliance with the incorporation of important themes. For instance, Emerson discusses that people tend to trust their successful past actions, and do not want to explore new paths, which may be a result of people’s lack of self-trust of their intuition.

Emerson believed that the truth is inside a person. There should not be a higher authority for a person than him or herself. He encourages people to do what they think is right, regardless of what other people think. The author believed that the community can be a major distraction to self-growth, including friendly visits and family needs.

From 1836 to 1837, Emerson presented a range of lectures at Boston's Masonic Temple. Although these lectures were never published as a separate work, lots of his thoughts were later used in Self-Reliance. Later thoughts by Emerson caused public censure. People believed that he had a radical view.

Ralph Waldo Emerson proposed a new philosophy of life. That philosophy drew upon ideas of Unitarianism, Romanticism, and German Idealism. Some of these ideas pertained closely to the values of the US at the time, including individualism, nature, and reform.

In this essay, the author states the values and incorporates them into his self-reliance philosophy. Over the time, some of the ideas by Emerson in his work “Self-Reliance” have proven to be right.

Since the archaic examples of the author cannot be applied anymore to modern life, other sources of transcendentalism should be found to sustain the ideas. Such strongholds of ideas do exist among environmentalists and hardworking people. Also, other modern barriers have appeared that and do not allow the use of the transcendentalist values of Self-Reliance. The ideas of the essay fit well with Emerson’s audience of those times, but some aspects of his work require alterations to totally relate to a contemporary teenager.
