Concepts of Classroom Management

Features of classroom management are defined by the main task of the educational sphere – to contribute to the development of the child’s personality.

A teacher in the situation of classroom management should occupy a position of a pupil’s assistant, and a person, who helps in achieving goals. It is necessary to make the situation of interaction predictable and understandable for the student so that he or she could make a choice and independent decisions.

Teacher’s goals in the classroom when working with younger schoolchildren is to tach them to set goals, plan activities, and evaluate the results of their own activities.

Classroom management is the process of maintaining business learning atmosphere, making schoolchildren to actively work without violations of discipline.

If the classroom management is done right, then during lessons:

  • Students spend more time on learning – a teacher is not distracted to make comments to students for various derogations; a teacher starts the lesson always on time, because is able to calm the children. One of the most important tasks of classroom management is to increase the net time of the educational process.
  • Management is used for the development of self-management – when managing the classroom the right way, a teacher teaches children to take responsibility and creates rules and procedures for joint activities.

The main functions of classroom management are:

  • Setting objectives and planning of the lesson.
  • Organization of cooperation (the creation of a structure in the lesson, distribution of rights and responsibilities, establishment of standards, and self-management training).
  • Motivation, development of motives for learning.
  • Monitoring educational activity and its results (creation of an assessment system, setting of standards, establishment of feedback, and correction of deviations).

There are following common psychological and pedagogical requirements to the teacher:

  • The knowledge of the subject, ability to relate theoretical knowledge with experience.
  • Clarity, opportunity to stand on the position of the child, knowledge of teaching methods.
  • The warmth and friendliness, adequate pedagogical communication.
  • Enthusiasm, interest in the subject, desire to teach and motivate.

The teacher can determine the success of the actions by focusing on the following criteria:

  • The lesson went well: schoolchildren have raised their self-esteem in class and felt themselves competent.
  • The lesson went bad: a schoolchild leaves the lesson, humiliated, depressed or frustrated, and does not see any useful result for the classes to themselves.
