Shakespeare’s History by Irvin Ribner

The book The English History Play in the Age of Shakespeare by Irvin Ribner presents the most comprehensive study of the English historical drama from its start to the closing of the theaters in 1642. The book shows this development in terms of Renaissance historiography and Elizabethan political theory.

William Shakespeare was the greatest genius of the literature and dramatist of the English Renaissance era.

In England, Renaissance started later than in other European countries, and it was associated with the reign of the Tudor dynasty. The second king of the dynasty, Henry VIII, in 1529 overturned Catholicism in England and declared himself the head of the Anglican Church. All of his activity was secured during the reign of his daughter Elizabeth. In her reign the country blossomed with absolutism, there was peace and order, and the nation was inspired by the desire for expansion and changes to become a world power. In Elizabethan era, relative internal stability created conditions for the cultural development: new colleges and universities were opened, and the development of printing led to the spread of books and knowledge. The second half of the 16th century in England was the heyday of the arts: painting, music, and literature in particular.

The turn of 16th-17th centuries was the creation of the National Theatre in England, when the most gifted writers of the era worked in the theater. Many brilliant playwrights wrote plays for the theater.

The theatric art of Shakespeare’s time was a kind of synthesis of the Renaissance culture. By defining a most mature stage of this culture, Shakespeare spoke with it and future ages, as it were, on behalf of the whole era, the greatest progressive revolution.

Elizabethan theater represented an extensive theater system that includes expensive closed theaters (such as Blackfriars, and Capellas), Court Theatre, elitist academic theaters, settled in the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and London law schools that from time to time staged their own performances.

Shakespeare was the full-time playwright at the Globe Theater. He occupied this position from 1590 until 1612. During this time he created 36 pieces that make up the so-called Shakespeare’s canon. Historical chronicles and comedies dominated his early works. From the mid-1590s Shakespeare began to write tragedies (Romeo and Juliet). All the best Shakespeare’s tragedies were created in the first decade of the 17th century. His later plays – The Winter’s Tale and The Tempest – with their fabulous fantasy open up new horizons in the drama.
