Delisting the Gray Wolf

About 300 wolves live in Algonquin Provincial Park, the central Ontario forest.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made a proposal to remove gray wolves from the endangered species list across most of the country. Such an action would leave the animals vulnerable to hunting. In order to support its proposal, the agency used a contested scientific paper explaining that gray wolves never existed in the eastern US, which means that they should not have been protected in this area in the first place.

Instead of the gray wolf, the agency said, the different species of wolf “eastern wolf” should be living in Algonquin Park. The agency had lots of disputes with canid biologists regarding the existence the “lost species” for years. Anyway, the researchers believe that even if the Algonquin wolves are a different species that should not affect the protections for the gray wolf.

The gray wolf appeared in the list of the endangered species list in 1967. It was defined as a single species. Hunting, poisoning, trapping, and habitat loss had almost driven the gray wolf to extinction in the continental US.

Thanks to the protection, wolves from western Canada spread the south. In 1995, 41 wolves appeared in Yellowstone National Park. For the first time in decades, wolf howls could be heard in the park. Today, many believe that the Yellowstone wolf reintroduction is one of greatest success stories of American conservation.

In 2011, the Fish and Wildlife Service removed the Great Lakes wolf off the endangered species list. Soon, a controversial act of Congress delisted gray wolf populations in most of the Rocky Mountains. Any gray wolves that appear beyond the northern Rockies and the Great Lakes would no longer have endangered species protection.

Wolves are energetic travelers, and they wolves do not remain in one place. In recent years, wolves have been seen in Oregon, Washington, and northern California, and supposedly in Utah and Colorado. Wolves from the Great Lakes went to Iowa and Illinois.

The Endangered Species Act still protects wolves outside the northern Rockies and the Great Lakes. The Fish and Wildlife Service proposed to remove the rest of gray wolves from the federal endangered species list. Some states wish to work with the federal government on wolf management, but others only want to have a sole control of any wolves that appear in their area.

Don Barry believes that gray wolf may be removed from the list only after returning to suitable habitat.
