Light and Dark Imagery of Macbeth

Macbeth is one of the most famous tragedies in literature and it was written by William Shakespeare. Basically, there are many symbols and imageries used in this talented literary piece, including the symbolism of light and darkness. This means that the story of Macbeth is the battle of good and evil. Macbeth and his wife are two persons who make up the most of this kind of imagery because both of these characters commit their evil crimes in the darkness. It’s a tool used by them and it lead them to execute their murderous and evil acts.

Besides, three witches are quite evil, and the main plot starts when Macbeth meets them because they tell him prophecies that occupy his entire mind. These witches tell him that he will soon become the king, but Macbeth still don’t understand them clearly enough. These prophecies make him think about the privileges and roles of being the king of Scotland. It’s the first time when this character wants the darkness to hide him evil wishes because he realizes that they are very wrong.

When Lady Macbeth hears about the prophecies of witches, she becomes obsessed with the idea of becoming a queen and killing Duncan. That’s why she keeps asking spirits to provide her with enough power to commit these evil deeds. She also desired the darkness to play a major role in hiding the murder of Duncan or at least help her husband. Macbeth and his wife want the darkness to surround them when killing the king.

After this evil deed, Macbeth becomes the crowned king, but he needs to be careful to prevent other people from learning the truth. The whole Shakespeare’s play is written with its inlaid imagery of darkness and light because every act includes contrasting images of the battle between good and evil. For readers, it’s easy to understand that darkness and light are only metaphors for good and evil.

All the scenes that include light are the ones that don’t involve the corrupt nature of Macbeth and show those characters who are good and keep fighting for something good. The scenes that contain the darkness include murders and other evil crimes committed by Macbeth and his wife. In conclusion, the author uses these important symbols to indicate the contrast in his play and show where evil hides in all acts. It’s hard to imagine this famous play without the imagery of darkness and light because its plot revolves around the battle of good against evil.
