Negative Effects of Steroids and Drugs

Steroids are substances of animal or vegetable origin with high biological activity that regulate vital processes in animals and humans. Steroids include human’s steroid alcohol, cholesterol, cholic acid, etc.

Anabolic steroids are drugs synthesized on the base of male sex hormone, testosterone, which is responsible for the formation of a muscular male figure.

In medicine, the drugs of this group are used in the rehabilitation period after serious illnesses and injuries, causing the total depletion of the body, as well as to accelerate the healing of wounds and burns.

Anabolic steroids facilitate absorption of substances necessary for cell growth, thereby stimulating the body weight gain and an increase in muscle strength. This property has become the basis of a wide use of anabolic steroids in sports.

According to some sources, athletes were using stimulants to improve athletic performance already during the ancient Olympic Games.

In 1865, there was the first officially recorded case of doping by swimmers. In 1866, the first fatality associated with the use of performance-enhancing drugs was registered for the first time. But despite this fact, stimulants of various kinds are used in the sport today almost everywhere.

However, the most widespread doping in sport began with the creation of synthetic testosterone in 1935. According to sports historians, athletes’ great success in Germany at the XI Olympic Games in 1936 was achieved using this particular drug.

In the 1950s-1970s, a large number of synthetic derivatives of testosterone were obtained with increased anabolic properties.

Most anabolic steroids have primarily hepatotoxic properties, that is, a negative impact on liver function. Therefore, these drugs are usually taken in conjunction with drugs that improve the work of this organ.

In general, regular steroid consumption promotes hormone disturbance of equilibrium in the body that can lead to many pathologies. For men, this can be expressed in reduction of sperm production, impotence, and the development of prostate tumors. For women, this can lead to changes in the menstrual cycle, muscles grow, coarse voice, hair growth, etc. The regular use of steroids by teenagers can be particularly dangerous: among other things, steroids sometimes cause premature cessation of growth.

As for the addiction, anabolic steroids by providing a tonic effect on the body cause serious psychological addiction. Failure to take steroids and drugs after long-term use can lead to the patient’s deep depression.
